At the end of the post you will find my personal opinion.
To explain to the citizenship the second phase of the tram, we were requested to product several urban renders to explain the visual impact.
In this occasion, in contrast to the infographics of the first phase, the tram did not play a leading role in the images. People had already been used to its presence in the city. Our urban render work consisted of transmitting changes in the urban layout of the city that this second phase was going to cause. Showing the tram as the focus of their wake was not interesting. The point was transmit the benefits of the solution in relation to roads, green areas, bike paths, etc.
Four locations were chosen: Paseo Independencia, Mercado Central, Actur and Parque Goya.
The information provided by the team of architects Alday Jover, consisted of:
Google Street view photographs to locate locations
Paseo Independencia urban render
Mercado Central urban render
Actur – World Trade Center
My opinion on the tram
- Urbanistically it generates a similar barrier (similar only) to the train. I do not understand that some arguments are used to bury the railway and others to implement the tram. It is a rigid infrastructure.
- The use of electricity is not an argument for environmental cleanup. The tram does not generate smoke, but power plants are not the paradigm of sustainability.
- I think with the budget used they could have made a long-term approach. Something that, no doubt, is not the main criteria of those who have to decide. Their “wants” have a maximum four-year horizon. For example, a fleet of hydrogen buses would have been a more flexible solution in time. Today may be the hydrogen and tomorrow solar power. Who knows? With the cost of the works they could make changes to the means of transport when it was requested. Without works and adaption to the technology in time.
- The works have caused some irreparable losses to traders. It cannot be an argument that they have now improved their situation. Rebuttable argument anyway because, with fewer stops there is less foot traffic.
We also developed another tram project. This time for Balear Govern.
Let’s enjoy the tram. The desire of a few has been achieved. In short, a streetcar named desire.
